Monthly Expenses Calculator

Convert bills paid on different schedules into one true monthly figure. Separate essential costs from discretionary spending without uploading or saving your data.

Private by design: the calculation runs in your browser. Entries are not submitted or stored.

Expense list

Add what you actually pay

Method

Every expense is converted to an annual amount first.

This avoids treating a €720 bill paid twice per year as €720 per month. Finance Charts annualises each row, adds the totals, then divides by 12.

Weeklyamount × 52 ÷ 12
Every two weeksamount × 26 ÷ 12
Quarterlyamount × 4 ÷ 12
Twice yearlyamount × 2 ÷ 12

Budget worksheet

Turn the calculator into a reusable household expense worksheet.

Add rent or mortgage payments, utilities, groceries, insurance, subscriptions, transport and other recurring costs. When the list reflects your household, download it as a CSV to sort, annotate or share in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

The worksheet preserves each entered payment schedule and includes comparable monthly and annual amounts. That makes irregular bills visible without pretending they occur every month.

Worked example

Weekly and twice-yearly bills belong in the same monthly total.

Using the starter rows, 1,200 of monthly housing, 120 of weekly groceries, 720 of twice-yearly insurance and 180 of monthly leisure become 2,020 per month. The calculation classifies 1,840 as essential and 180 as discretionary.

The weekly groceries contribute 520 per month because 120 × 52 ÷ 12 = 520. The insurance contributes 120 per month because 720 × 2 ÷ 12 = 120.

Interpretation

Essential and discretionary are planning labels, not universal categories.

Mark a cost essential when it would remain necessary during an income disruption. The choice depends on your household. A car may be essential for one person and optional for another.

Your essential monthly result can feed the emergency-fund model without creating a universal recommendation.

Next step

Turn essential spending into reserve scenarios.

Once you know your essential monthly expenses, compare several coverage periods instead of treating one emergency-fund target as universal.
