How the differences work

Current percentage equals an asset class value divided by the total portfolio entered. Target value equals the same portfolio total multiplied by your chosen target percentage.

The difference assumes no change in total portfolio value and ignores tax, fees, spreads and transaction constraints. It is arithmetic, not a trade instruction.

Formula

Allocation measures composition, not performance.

If a €100,000 portfolio contains €60,000 of equities, its current equity allocation is 60%. A 50% target at the same total value would equal €50,000, a difference of −€10,000.

Interpretation

Targets belong to the user, not the calculator.

Age alone cannot establish an appropriate allocation. Time horizon, capacity for loss, liquidity needs, concentration, liabilities, tax treatment and the purpose of the portfolio all matter.

Investor.gov describes asset allocation as dividing investments among categories such as stocks, bonds and cash, and notes that the appropriate mix is personal.

Broader balance sheet

Portfolio allocation and net worth answer different questions.

Allocation measures how an investment portfolio is divided. Net worth also includes liabilities and non-portfolio assets.
