Formula

Personal savings rate = (cash saved + employee investment contributions + extra debt principal) ÷ after-tax income.

Method

Choose one definition and apply it consistently.

There is no single household savings-rate convention. This calculator uses after-tax income and includes money directed to cash, investments and debt principal beyond required payments.

See alternative savings-rate definitions →

Avoid double counting

Count each amount once.

If an investment contribution is deducted before the income reaches your bank account, add it to both the after-tax income denominator and the investment-contribution input or exclude it from both.

Reference

Disposable income is income available to spend or save.

The US Bureau of Economic Analysis defines the national personal saving rate as personal saving divided by disposable personal income. This calculator adapts the denominator concept for a user-entered household measure.
